Hi! I’m Mary Carter, 26, from Warwick. I have been a qualified Athletics Coach and working with children for 8 years. I coached for 5 years with Onside Coaching while at School and University. When I was at school, I knew I wanted to Coach/Teach PE and coaching athletics at school was my first taste. From school I completed a Degree in Sports Science and Coaching.
When I finished University, I went into a full-time job at a Special Needs School and took a break from regular coaching. I counited to use all my skills and knowledge in taking P.E lessons and movement sessions. I still work with children; with special needs, this is my main passion outside of athletics.
My general background in athletics is as an athlete, I have specialised in Javelin after leaving School and before that Cross country and Heptathlon up until leaving school. While at Uni I competed at BUCS and Medalled at the Midland Champs several times in Shot Putt and Javelin. It wasn’t until 2019 I won my first Warwickshire Championships in Javelin.

4 years later I’m back coaching the Junior Section of the club on a Tuesday Evening. I also help Co organise and run our first summer camps over the 6 weeks holidays alongside David Ashbourne.
The disciplines I enjoy coaching the most are Junior Multi Events, Throws and Physical Prep. I enjoy coaching children new skills and encouraging a fit and healthy lifestyle. Through the winter months it can be challenging to keep sessions fun and enjoyable. It takes a little of time to think and adapt sessions when the weather changes, but this is what makes you a better coach. The key is to keep it simple and FUN!
I have many moments which my proud of, but the best would be seeing that break though moment for an athlete who has been practicing and practicing a new technique. Sometimes it can take children weeks if not months to perfect a specific technique for an event, it’s great to see the light bulb moment.
I hope to continue grow the junior section of the club and support our young athletes into event group and through to the senior age groups.
FUN FACT– 2018 I ran the London marathon, the hottest London Marathon to date.
FAVOURITE ATHLETE – Jess Ennis-Hill and Greg Rutherford (Of Course)
MY BEST ADVICE – ‘ENJOY’ and ‘NEVER GIVE UP’, champions aren’t born overnight.
